when i'm free or in trouble, i always take out a book and read quietly. inno time, i've put my heart into it so that i'll forget all the troubles. it's inthis way that i've formed the habit of reading in any time.

little boys as i was, i was interest in picture books and storybooks. i wasstruck by them. no sooner had i entered the middle school than i began to readnovel, plays, and essays and so on. i found i could get much from them. littleby little i took great interest in literature and last term i won the firstprize in the composition contest among middle-school students in zhe jiang.

reading “the emperor's new clothes”, i had to let out a burst of laughterover his fool. “the little match girl” couldn't keep me from crying for hermisery. “robinson crusoe” took me into a strange world full of danger. and i wasalso deeply impressed by helen keller's patience and perseverance… besidesthese, books also tell me other thing -how to be a man and how to tell thedifference between right and wrong. in a word, good books can make me know whati didn't before. so i think of a good book as my best friend.

i'll never forget this famous saying,“good books are best friends who neverturn their backs upon us.”

good morning ladies and gentlemen. today i’m very glad to be here with youto share my stories and opinions about reading. i love reading from the bottomof my heart. and i do learn a lot from books. i know the wonderful stories ofgreat heroes in history, secrets of nature, mysteries of ufo and our universe.to me , books are like a faithful friend, always around me , giving me enjoymentand wisdom.

i remember when i was in primary school, ten or eleven years old, my fatherborrowed some books from the library in his school. those were among thegreatest works of the world, including abrabian nights、the legend ofdeification, journey to the west, and the romance of the three kingdoms. thesebooks were all written in ancient chinese characters but i tried to read theheavy books and were deeply attracted. from then on, i spared every minute toread whatever i could get. whenever i got a new book, i kept reading until ifinished it despite time and place. i read books even in class or just a fewminutes before the exams. in my mind, there is always an unforgettable scene:lying in bed, nervous but excited, my friend and i read a book together in theweak light of a flashlight , with a quilt on us, in order not to be blamed byparents. all my classmates thought i was crazy and gave me a nickname“bookworm”. so you can understand why i got my eyes shortsighted.

till now, i still like reading as i used to. and i’m very pleased to seethat my ten-year-old son loves reading just like me. i have bought him manybooks. whenever you come into my home, you can find books in every corner. butthe place where my son and i enjoy reading most is in the toilet. so it oftenhappens in the morning: one is in the toilet reading something comfortably, while another walking outside , shouting. for my age, i like to read magazinesor short stories to get relaxation as well as inspiration.

today we live in a world of prosperity. never before have we faced so manytemptation from the outside world. never before have we had so many chances toenjoy our lives. we drive rather than walking; we go online to chat with peoplewe’ve never met before instead of talking to friends around us. but there’salways something that cannot be replaced and forgotten., such as books. so iwill allow myself to continue the journey in the ocean of books until the veryend of my life.

finally, i’d like to end my speech with a great philosopher, writer andthinker, francis bacon’s famous saying: reading makes a full man. studies servefor delight, for ornament, and for ability.

thank you very much.

in this summer holidays, i read a book called < great expectations>,it was written by the charles dickens, one of the most famous english writers。he wrote lots of wonderful novels。 this book is one of his positions。

people always like to pare with their friends。 it is a big foible of allthe people。 if other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich。 if allthe people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too。 wewill not ashamed because of our folly。 this is a social problem。

if we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing。 since wedon’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor。

the protagonist of this novel is pip (handel)。 his parents died when he wasa baby。 his sister had brought him up ‘by hand’。 his sister married to joegargery, the village blacksmith。 they didn’t have much money, and pip never wentto school to study。 but he was often very happy 。because all of his friends arelike him。 it isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives。 but by achance, pip helped a convict; he gave much food to him。 then he met misshavisham, a very strange old woman and she was very rich。

people often say that gold and silver are the most valuable things in theworld.but

i don't think so. in my opinion, to read books is more valuable thananything else.

the old saying "to open a book is always helpful" clearly tells us how goodit is to read a book.

books are our friends. they introduce us different kinds of knowledge. theylead us down the road to success.

books are our teachers. they teach us troth, science, literature, andphilosophy of life. besides, they increase our knowledge, enlarge ourexperience, strengthen our character and do many other things which we can not dowithout them.

books tell us what is good and what is evil. and only books can tell thegood from the bad.

therefore to read more books is the best policy for our young students.

as is well known, books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things.

they increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. in other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends.

this is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.

reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books.

it is true that we can derive benefits from good books.

however, bad books will do us more harm than good.

we have received education since the very young age. the elder always tellsthe young generation that study makes them become an useful person, so as tomake a lot of money. as a result, in children’s mind, the purpose of reading isto make money. indeed, when we learn, we will master the skills and find ourplace in the world. first, we need some skills to make money and make ends meet, but the meaning of reading is more than that. reading can teach us the positiveand different ways to treat life. a painting’s value will be appreciated by thepeople educated well, but for some people, it is just a picture. reading endowsus the beauty from life. it makes us happy and see a bigger world.

one of the most interesting questions about gullivers travels is whetherthe houyhnhnms represent an ideal of rationality or whether on the other handthey are the butt of swift's satire。 in other words, in book iv, is swift pokingfun at the talking horses or does he intend for us to take them seriously as theproper way to act? if we look closely at the way that the houyhnhnms act, we cansee that in fact swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show thedangers of pride。

first we have to see that swift does not even take gullver seriously。 forinstance, his name sounds much like gullible, which suggests that he willbelieve anything。 also, when he first sees the yahoos and they throw excrementon him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away。 he says, "imust needs discover some more rational being," even though as a human he isalready the most rational being there is。 this is why swift refers to erasmusdarwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the beagle-toshow how gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain。 but iflemule gulliver is satirized, so are the houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like thecall of castrati。 they walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be muchlike people。 as gulliver says, "it was with the utmost astonishment that iwitnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a vienese waltz。 to mymind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more d

extrous than the lord edmund burke" 。 as this quote demonstrates, gulliveris terribly impressed, but his admiration for the houyhnhnms is short-livedbecause they are so prideful。 for instance, the leader of the houyhnhnms claimsthat he has read all the works of charles dickens, and that he cansinglehandedly recite the names of all the kings and queens of england up togeorge ii。 swift subtly shows that this houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, inthe middle of the intellectual petition, he forgets the name of queen elizabethshusband。

swifts satire of the houyhnhnms es out in other ways as well。 one of themost memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horsethat guenivre has brought with him to the island。 first she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse。 but when this does not have the desiredeffect, she gets another idea: "as i watched in amazement from my perch in thetop of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her backwho was yet more monstrous than mr。 pope being fitted by a clothier。 she droppedthis creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice。 my horse sniffed thecreature and turned away。" it might seem that we should take this sceneseriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should seethe grey mare as an unrequited lover。 but it makes more sense if we see thatswift is being satiric here: it is the female houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century england。 the houyhnhm isb

eing prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impressgullivers horse。 gulliver imagines the horse saying, sblood, the notion ofcreating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held mr。 pope on her backmakes me queezy 。

a final indication that the houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriouslyoccurs when the leader of the houynhms visits lilliput, where he visits thefrench royal society。 he goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turnwine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at gallilee)。the scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years withoutsuccess, when the houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: "thecreature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan。slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that satnear the door" 。
