the scarlet letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if american puritan society. the basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. the female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “a” on her dress at all times. it concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. its not simply a love story or a story of sin. the scarlet letter by nathaniel hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.
the story happened in boston about 200 years ago. it narrates love affairs between three persons. the punished woman. hester prynne and his husband. who called himself roger chillingworth . he is an old misshapen man and a doctor. hester does not love him at all. another man is a young minister, dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. hester and dimmesdale love each other. but their love is forbidden in that time . it is sinful. due to this, hester is punished by society with a letter a on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.
in this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter a. hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. she is always with a mind of courage. she has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. shame! hopelessness! loneliness! hester has to wear the letter a day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.
when a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. if she be all tenderness, she will die. if she survive, the tenderness will leave her .hesters charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. the letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. the townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “able”.
but arthur dimmesdale, his sin against hester and pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife.
"in february and march 1975, it was an ordinary day. the thin rain with a little snowflake was splashing to the earth one after another." it was with such a delicate description that i entered the ordinary world. the whole book is so simple language, without a trace of flashy affectation. but there is a force that goes straight into the hearts of the people and surrounds me warmly.
a group of farmers facing the loess and facing the sky live an ordinary life on the loess plateau for generations. in this ordinary world, these ordinary people have extraordinary sparkling souls. shao'an is a simple farmer and a genuine farmer, but in my eyes, he is a real man of indomitable spirit. he began to do farm work at the age of six. at the age of 13, he dropped out of school with the third grade in the county, just to share the burden of the family. at the age of 21, facing runye's confession, he was full of joy, but he could only marry someone else because of his helplessness. for his poor family, he never had the slightest dislike and complaint. his elderly parents, ailing grandmother, and younger siblings in school depend on him even when they visit the ghost brother-in-law's house. he fed the big family with hard work and explained the true meaning of responsibility with a man's solid arm. "a man is not born to be defeated. you can destroy him as much as you can, but you can't defeat him." the burden of life did not overwhelm shaoan, but exacerbated his desire for the future, gave him the motivation to work hard, and narrowed the distance between him and his dream step by step. from a farmer who had no money to marry a daughter-in-law to a well-known entrepreneur, how much hardship and sweat did he pay. when the brick factory went bankrupt, his bricks were destroyed and the bank loan had to be repaid. the villagers' discontent was more like the last straw that killed the camel, which made him out of breath. he felt an unprecedented despair. but in the end, he didn't give up. he still welcomed the promising future with full enthusiasm. he is just a farmer and doesn't know the philosophy of famous sayings. all he knew was that in order for his grandmother to be able to afford medicine, for his baby to be able to afford school, and even for the villagers to look up to the new cave, he had to make constant efforts and never give up. "life can't wait for others to arrange, we have to struggle by ourselves." this is the most impressive sentence in the book. if life requires you to endure pain, you must stick to it. if you just complain about the injustice of life and fate, but do nothing, and are willing to be strangled by fate for a lifetime, then you are truly ordinary. the road ahead is difficult and dangerous. don't give up. if you are frustrated, don't give up. in any case, please believe that suffering is to climb the ladder of success, and more than struggle will eventually help you open the door to success. may our ordinary life glow with extraordinary brilliance.
impression after reading ode to a nightingale
after reading ode to a nightingale, i felt my blood boiled, i was on fire and full of enthusiasm and just could not calm down. it is so romantic and i had been touched so much. in fact, although the title of the poem is “ode to a nightingale”, throughout the poem, it has basically little words describing the nightingale directly however the writer mainly uses the graceful image of nightingale to express his own feelings. it is said that a nightingale will die on a full moon night. and at midnight, it will fly to the highest rose-tree, and uses the thorn scratch its chest, then makes out a sonorous sound, singing loudly until the blood of the heart dries and reds the roses on the branches. meanwhile this sound of singing seems like could penetrate everywhere and everything and keep an eternal life. i see the energy and hope of life and a bright future, and suddenly get courage and become positive. i think the poem makes me feel in that way.
and the author of ode to nightingale is john keats who is a romantic poet from uk. he was born at a poor family in the end of 18 century in london. in 1818, when keats was 23 years old he got tuberculosis while also was deeply in love with miss fannie boone. just under such a terrible condition which between agony, poverty and sweetness, keats was quite enthusiastic, full of grief and indignation and kept the desire for life in his heart. therefore, he wrote the poem ode to a nightingale on a sober night and companied with the loud sound of the birds.
it is acknowledged that the poet was in difficulties and tied out however at this time he heard the nightingale’s loud singing like an inspiring ring. his heart was moved by such sound of singing. i remember the poem was written like this, “that i may drink, and leave the world unseen, and with thee fade away into the forest dim. fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget what thou amongst the leaves hast never known, the weariness, the fever, and the fret here, where men sit and hear each other groan; where palsy shakes a few, sad, last grey hairs.” the soft night and beautiful surroundings make keats feel comfortable and enjoyable. even though he does not know the names of the flowers, he feels them by heart and soul. what’ more, he absorbs in this world and hope he can always live in such a place where is far from that dark society. ode to a nightingale has a clear feature of romance, keats uses perfect metaphors, gorgeous and quite fluent words to express his strong ideas and deep desire to free world. and i consider the british romance style reaches perfection from keats.
